Skills to Know as a Certified Nursing Assistant

Starting a career in caregiving brings both purpose and responsibility. The role requires technical ability, patience, and consistent hands-on practice. The certified nursing assistant path begins with training, then moves into hands-on experience and testing through the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP). This program sets the foundation for the daily work that follows in homes and care settings.

Key Skills Needed as a Certified Nursing Assistant

The NNAAP exam was created by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing to measure readiness through two parts: a written test and a skills demonstration. The written test is available in English and Spanish, and the skills test focuses on practical actions that support safe care.

During the skills test, the exam proctor assigns five tasks. These tasks come from a larger skills catalog and are chosen at random. Hand washing always appears on the list. The remaining tasks change with each exam, so steady practice across all areas helps candidates stay prepared.

Skills that may be tested include:

  • Donning and Doffing Gown and Gloves
  • Positioning in Fowler’s Position
  • Positioning in Lateral Position
  • Transferring from Bed to Chair Using a Gait Belt
  • Assisting the Resident in Walking Using a Gait Belt
  • Making an Occupied Bed
  • Passive Range of Motion on the Upper Body
  • Passive Range of Motion on the Lower Body
  • Brushing Dentures
  • Mouth Care
  • Upper Body Partial Bed Bath
  • Lower Body Partial Bed Bath

Practice Habits That Support Certified Nursing Assistant Skills

Consistent study habits set up solid performance on the skills test. A certified nursing assistant works with timing and accuracy, so building muscle memory helps these tasks feel natural. Quick practice sessions, repetition on weak areas, and familiarization with the exam structure help each skill feel more comfortable.

The NNAAP allows three opportunities to pass. After three unsuccessful attempts, students must complete a full CNA program again before retesting. This resets the process and adds time, so steady practice is worth the effort.

Reviewing the full skills list, practicing each movement step by step, and reinforcing key techniques help candidates stay on track for exam days.

Skill Growth Through Instructor Support

Feedback plays a major role in growth. A certified nursing assistant builds confidence through correction, guidance, and practice. Students benefit from working directly with instructors who can watch movements, correct mistakes, and demonstrate the proper flow of each task.

Graduates may return for refresher sessions when certain skills feel unfamiliar or challenging. These focused one-on-one reviews target personal gaps and help students approach the exam with stronger confidence.
