What is a Parent or Family CNA?

A Certified Nursing Assistant or CNA is someone who takes care of a client or patient directly and helps them with anything they need. This includes:

            Taking vital signs

            Helping with activities and outings

Turning and repositioning patients as well as helping them to ambulate

Observing and reporting issues to nurses

            Assisting with medical procedures

Which Programs are CNAs Offered Under

Parent and Family CNAs are available for children who qualify under Colorado’s Medicaid Program, Health First Colorado. Adults who have intellectual or Developmental Disabilities qualify for services provided by a family CNA under a Supported Living Services Waiver (SLS). The Elderly Blind and Disabled Waiver also provides CNA care through the Consumer Directed Attendant Support Services program or CDASS.

How Do I Become a Paid Family Caregiver in Colorado?

All CNAs must take a minimum of 80 hours of instruction from a state-approved program. After completing the education section, you must pass both sections of the Certified Nursing Assistant and Nursing Aide Certification Exam. The exam tests your knowledge and will act as your certification or license in Colorado. Once you pass, all you have to do is submit an application to the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies to receive your license.  Contact us if you have any questions about how to become a paid family caregiver.
